USU music club to host ‘mismatched’ house show

The USU Independent Music Club will be hosting the Retro House Music Party on Thursday at 6 p.m. The concert will be the club’s first show at the Retro House this year. Six different groups will be performing at the event, each with its own sound.

The venue, Retro House, is home to a group of students known for hosting many parties throughout the school year.

“They understand that it’s going to be loud,” said Mekenna Malan, a co-officer of the club. “It’s the perfect place for us to have a show.”

The club typically assigns a certain theme to its individual house shows. However, the Retro House Music Party will consist of several genres including acoustic, folk, techno, pop and alternative.

Malan said people often believe the Independent Music Club emphasizes the indie genre only, but the club tries to represent all types of music.

“This is going to be the most mismatched show that we’ve had,” she said. “Hopefully it will apply to a wide variety of people.”

Malan hopes the attendees will come to the show ready to “broaden their horizons” musically.

“People will come and realize that they can appreciate all sorts of genres,” she said.

Tanner Hivner, a performer for the house concert, has been searching for a way to enter the local music scene with his electronic and alternative R&B project, Science Friction. He came across the music club and joined the lineup for the show.

Hivner is expecting to have a great time and hopes he will be able to keep up with the other bands.

“All the musicians playing come from different backgrounds,” Hivner said. “I’m constantly amazed at the variety that the Logan music scene has to offer.”

The band Hallowed Oak is traveling from Boise, Idaho, in order to play the show. The band members booked the gig through Taylor Wilson, a member of the club, who they met while on tour.

“We’re expecting to have a killer time and spread the rad vibes,” said Gabriel Smith, a vocalist and guitarist for the band.

Smith also expects “dancing and merriment” from the audience.

“The show is on a Thursday,” he said. “Thursdays are way more party than Fridays.”

Other performers include Jacob Barton, Boone Hogg, The Red Light Commandos and little Barefoot.

The show will take place at 789 E. 900 North in Logan.
