Local band returns after recording in Nashville

The local band Kitfox traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, for the first time last month to record five songs with producer Gabe Simon. The band plans to record five more songs by November in order to release a full album.

Kitfox had the opportunity to meet Simon at a concert in Pennsylvania for his own band, Kopecky. Kitfox met the members of Kopecky after the show where they gave Simon their EP, “Where We Were.”

Simon later contacted Kitfox and asked the band to come to Nashville. The members agreed but they did not have the sufficient funds to travel.

In mid-January, the band began a Kickstarter to raise $10,000. By the middle of February, the members had reached their goal. On Mar. 1 they left for Nashville and recorded with Simon for two weeks.

“It was really interesting to get an outside perspective on our music,” said Emilee Holgate, the band’s lead vocalist.

The producers took Kitfox in a direction the members never thought they would go, but they were satisfied with the result.

“The music we write individually might feel good to us and sound good, but it might not be what’s appealing to wide audiences,” said Conor Flynn, the band’s bass player.

The producers had a specific vision for Kitfox and its music. The word "dusty" was commonly used to describe the music throughout the recording process. If any part of a song was not cohesive to the vision, the part would be cut.

“We never really thought about it that way,” Holgate said.

However, the members soon realized they shared the same ideas with their producers.

“We were really lucky that everything our producers wanted and envisioned in our music was what we wanted as well,” Flynn said.

Holgate said Kitfox’s songs tend to be moody, focusing on one emotion in each song, and the producers helped hone in on those specific feelings involved.

The members of Kitfox hope those who listen to their music will recognize these emotions and connect with the songs.

Kitfox will be playing its new songs at the USU End of Year Bash, also featuring Nico & Vinz and MKTO. Tickets are on sale now -- $5 for students and $20 for the public -- at the USU Card Office and USU Spectrum Ticket Office.
