Benefit concert merges with summer barbecue

The last Adams Park House Show of the school year is merging with the first Tan House Barbecue of the summer. The benefit concert and barbecue will take place on April 24.

The barbecues began last summer and the biweekly tradition is continuing this year, while the house concerts have occurred monthly during the past school year.

The residents of Tan House and creator of the house shows realized their first and final events fall on the same day.

“It seemed like the best thing to combine our events rather than competing,” said Mike Rees, a resident of the house.

The event will feature six bands that have previously played for the benefit shows.

"I think live music is one of those uplifting things that brings people together and can be easily combined with something good like charity," Rees said.

House show creator Seth Merrill usually picks the charities for the concerts, but he has allowed the performers to pick the organizations for the final show.

Merrill hopes this decision will encourage the friends and families of the performers to make donations.

“They’ll be more attached to that particular performer if they’re advocating for their own cause instead of one I arbitrarily picked,” he said.

One of the performing bands, Immodest Socks, has chosen the National Eating Disorders Association as its charity. NEDA supports individuals and families affected by eating disorders. The association also works toward prevention, cures and quality care.

“Many people don’t understand how destructive eating disorders can be,” said Chris Wilson, the lead vocalist for Immodest Socks. “Or that they are actually disorders, not just bad habits.”

Other charities chosen for the event include Ogden Valley Arts, Prayers for Sister Kendal Levine, Cache Humane Society, Best Buddies and the Family Institute of Northern Utah.

Wilson believes music has a remarkable power to bring people together, communicating things that can’t be put into words alone.

“It’s a great tool for inciting change and compassion,” he said.

Merrill also believes music and charity have a connection.

“They’re both driven by emotion,” he said. “When you combine them you get people who understand passion and artwork. They are willing to give more generously to charity when there’s artistic value and creativity behind it.”

Other performers include Jake Martin, Spencer Jensen, Kyler Tingey, Jake Bury & the Monas and Legal Tender.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. and the barbecue starts at 8 p.m. The event will take place at 655 E. 400 North in Logan.

T-shirts have been created and donated to the event by the organization SPCL Tee. All proceeds will go toward the performer’s charities. T-shirts are available for purchase now at the following webpage:
