Minneapolis band to play house show in Logan

The Minneapolis band We Are The Willows is currently touring farther west than it ever has before, and the members have decided to bring their orchestral indie rock sound to Logan, Utah. The house concert will take place tonight at 8 p.m.

The band contacted many different venues around the U.S. in order to schedule concerts for the tour.

“It’s kind of like scattering a handful of seeds and seeing what sticks,” said Peter Miller, the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist.

The band booked a gig at the Treefort Music Fest in Boise, Idaho, and the members wanted to play nearby venues on the days surrounding the event.

Hilary James -- a cellist, vocalist and keyboardist for the band -- found the Utah State Independent Music Club online and contacted it in regards to a show. The club organized the concert, entitled “Sprang Thang,” where We Are The Willows will play alongside locals Taylor Ross Wilson and Blackford Blues.

“House shows are perfect for creating something that feels really personal and close,” Miller said.

The band tries to center its shows around the attendees, getting a sense of what they need and playing accordingly.

“The reason I go to shows is to have that experience of a band completely opening up your world,” Miller added.

The band members believe they can create this experience with their unique music. We Are The Willows uses classical string instruments and structures its songs into movements in order to achieve an orchestral feel.

“An orchestra has so many different parts that come together to create one thing,” James said. “There’s not necessarily one instrument that always plays the lead. We layer a lot.”

The band will be playing songs from its latest record, "Picture Portrait," at the concert.

“We try to create a really positive environment where people can discover new music,” said Travis Collins, the bass player.

He said the band members create a fun atmosphere for the audience by having fun themselves.

“We give the best high fives in the nation,” James added.

The house show will take place at 581 E. 400 North in Logan. Other band members include Jeremiah Satterthwaite, Leah Ottman and Stephen Lindquist.
